Frequently asked questions

When you enrol, our system guides you through a digital consultation on the student dashboard. We gather information about your child's strengths, weaknesses, and entry goals to complete their student profile — so that teaching is personalised from day one and we can make better recommendations as teachers.

Yes. The program starts with foundational breakdowns before building to harder content. Teachers adapt to the group. Many students use this as their starting point.

If your child misses a session, they can attend any other available session that week — simply email us in advance to notify. Depending on availability, they may also be able to join an online session instead.

Each day covers a different section, so missing a day means missing that section entirely. We strongly recommend attending all 7 days. If that’s not possible, call us to discuss which days are most important for your child.

The Test Academy dashboard is your central hub. Parents can track improvement over time, view deep test analytics including percentiles and timing data, and review personalised teacher feedback after every session.

Weekly classes build skills gradually over 10+ weeks. The holiday program is an intensive crash course — all four test sections in one week. It’s ideal as a kickstart, a revision boost, or for families who can’t commit to weekly classes.

All tutors are selective high school graduates with a 98+ ATAR who have at least a few years of teaching experience. They are undertaking or have completed Law or STEM degrees at USyd or UNSW.

Just a pencil, eraser, and water bottle. All booklets and materials are provided. Students don’t need calculators — they’re not allowed in the real test either.

Yes — switching between online and in-person attendance is possible with notice to our admin team. We're happy to accommodate flexibility where we can.

Yes. Students take home all booklets plus additional practice question sets. They also get access to our Discord community where teachers answer questions right up to exam day.

Yes. During online enrolment, we offer a multi-term discount for families who are committed to ongoing preparation — just as we're committed to helping your child thrive.

Teachers provide verbal feedback throughout. At the end of the program, students will have completed extensive practice across all sections. You’ll notice the difference in their confidence and speed.

Returning students who re-enrol for non-multi-term courses receive a 5% discount — permanently. Once you're part of the Test Academy family, you're always looked after.

Full refund if cancelled 7+ days before the program starts. Within 7 days, you can transfer your spot to another student.

Yes. A 5% sibling discount is provided upon request when two or more students from the same family are joining, or if an existing sibling is already enrolled with us.

No. Our booklets, strategies, and materials are designed in-house by our team. We don’t use generic workbooks. Our tutors are 98+ ATAR selective school graduates who teach our specific methods.

That's great — they're already getting support, which is the most important thing. Many of our students actually come from other tutoring centres when they're looking for something more tailored, better technology and student engagement, and more personalised attention from top-quality teachers.

Suite 107, 18-20 Ross Street, Parramatta — a 5-minute walk from Parramatta Station. Street parking and paid lots are nearby. Many families drop off and return at session end.

Ideally from Term 1 or Term 2 of Year 5. That said, we regularly help students make significant jumps in marks across all sections with just one term of preparation.

Yes. Existing Test Academy students receive a discount. Sibling and bring-a-friend discounts are also available — mention when enrolling to have it applied.

We offer a free first session subject to availability. That said, most parents commit knowing they can leave within the first two weeks — and almost all end up staying.

Just stationery, a snack, and water. Everything else — from printed booklets and worksheets to computers — is provided by us. We don't do BYOD.

Writing is marked using our proprietary WritingHub system. It objectively follows prompt-specific marking rubrics faster and more consistently than any human marker, delivering highly specific feedback, suggestions for improvement, and tailored writing exercises for immediate correction and growth.

After the Selective Test program, our students are so advanced that from mid-Term 2 to Term 4 we accelerate them through all of Year 7 high school mathematics. They continue to stay an entire year ahead with us — giving them the ultimate confidence and advantage throughout high school and placing them in a strong position for HSC success.

NSW Selective High School Practice Tests — Complete Guide

The NSW Selective High School Placement Test is administered by the NSW Department of Education to select Year 6 students for entry into Year 7 at one of the state's 51 selective and partially selective high schools. The test is delivered fully online with typed writing, and roughly 17,000 candidates sit for around 4,248 available places each year — making genuine, structured preparation important rather than optional. Test Academy's bundle catalogue covers all four sections; bundles are split between Essential (6-month access) and Complete (12-month access plus WritingHub and LearningHub).

What the Selective Test tests, section by section

Reading. Reading tests inference, vocabulary in context, tone, and argument analysis across passages of varying difficulty. Strong readers practise on screen — passages can run to several hundred words and require scrolling, sustained focus, and confident on-screen reading. Reading comprehension practice questions in the Test Academy bank are matched in length and complexity to the real test.

Mathematical Reasoning. Mathematical Reasoning practice questions cover number, algebraic, geometric, and statistical reasoning, applied to multi-step word problems and quick-fire reasoning prompts. Students who score well typically build fluency through hundreds of varied questions, not deep textbook study of one topic at a time.

Thinking Skills. Selective thinking skills practice is the section most students find hardest — logical reasoning, pattern recognition, lateral problem-solving, and identifying flawed arguments. This is also the section where the largest score gains tend to come from consistent practice rather than coaching on content.

Writing. The Selective writing task is a single typed response in 30 minutes — narrative, persuasive, diary, or hybrid prompts. Since 2025 it carries 25% of the total mark, the same weight as Maths or Reading. Test Academy's writing prompts cover all recurring prompt types, with criterion-by-criterion feedback against Content, Creativity, Organisation, and Language Conventions.

How the Selective Test is scored

Each section's raw mark is scaled and combined; final entry scores are out of 100, with each section weighted at 25% since 2025. There is no single fixed cut-off — entry scores vary by school and year, with the most competitive schools (James Ruse, Baulkham Hills, North Sydney Girls, Sydney Girls, Sydney Boys) regularly requiring scores in the high 80s and above. The NSW DoE publishes general guidance but not school-by-school cut-offs. Equity placements account for up to 20% of offers: 10% for low socio-educational advantage backgrounds, 5% for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, with further allocations for rural/remote students and students with disability.

When to start preparing

The right preparation length depends on where the student is starting. Volume alone does not drive improvement — the quality of review after each test matters far more than the number of tests completed. Reading and understanding the step-by-step explanations for every incorrect answer is what separates students who plateau from those who keep improving. See the tiered preparation roadmap above for recommended pace at 12 months, 6 months, 3 months, and 1 month out — late starts are not hopeless; the 1-month plan focuses on sharpening rather than cramming.

2025 Bruniges review aftermath

Following the 2025 Bruniges independent review of test-day disruptions, NSW DoE has tightened venue logistics: a maximum of 300 students per large venue and 180 per smaller venue, with the department directly overseeing logistics and dashboard transparency from 2026 onwards. Multiple test versions are now used to reduce any version-difficulty advantage. Parents preparing children for the 2027 sitting should expect smaller, more controlled venues than the very large halls used in 2024-2025.

From the 2027 intake — gender equity

Coeducational selective high schools and OC classes will offer equal numbers of girls' and boys' places from the 2027 intake, addressing the steady decline in girls applying and accepting offers. If your daughter is preparing for Year 7 2027 entry, this is a meaningful change to be aware of — it does not change the test format, but it does change the offer pool composition at coed schools.

Selective practice in Sydney

Test Academy is based in Parramatta and used by NSW families across Sydney suburbs including Hurstville, Strathfield, Chatswood, Hornsby, Bankstown, Castle Hill, and Epping, as well as regional NSW. Local in-person Selective preparation runs from the Parramatta campus; the online platform serves families anywhere in the state. Both arms share the same curriculum, question bank, and WritingHub rubrics — so a student in regional NSW practising online gets the same content as a student attending classes in Parramatta.
