The Selective Holiday Crash Course is a seven day intensive run during the school holidays for Year 5 and Year 6 students. Each day is three and a half hours. Every intake runs twice, as a class at our Parramatta centre and as a live online class, and you choose which one you join. Upcoming dates and the course price are on the Class Schedule at the bottom of this page.
How the seven days are spent
Each section of the Selective test gets its own block of days, so a section is taught properly rather than skimmed.
- Days 1 and 2, Mathematical Reasoning: advanced fractions, ratios, angles, area, unit conversions, time zones, and multi-step problems, with drills on multiplication and division
- Days 3 and 4, Thinking Skills: every major question type, each with a strategy to work through it
- Days 5 and 6, Reading Comprehension: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, extract comprehension, cloze and inline cloze, and all five reading question types
- Day 7, Writing: literary technique, showing rather than telling, reading a prompt, coming up with ideas quickly, and writing to time
Parramatta or online
The online class is the same course, taught live. It is not a recording. The same teacher takes it, the days are the same three and a half hours, and the class is capped at the same small number of students, so your child can ask questions and be answered as they go.
The printed course booklets are posted to online students before the first session, so they work from the same pages as the class in the room. Book at least a week before the intake starts to give the post time to arrive. If you are booking later than that, contact us and we will sort the booklets out with you.
The course costs the same whether your child joins in Parramatta or online.
What is included
- Seven days of teaching in a small group, in the room or live online
- Booklets written for the course, with worked examples, guided practice and homework, kept by the student, and posted out for online students
- Fresh questions written for each intake, so a student who has sat the course before does not see the same paper
- Access to the Test Academy Online Forum, which continues after the course ends
Good to know
- It is a one off course rather than a term enrolment, so it is paid for in full rather than by term, and the multi-term discount does not apply.
- A small materials fee covers the colour booklets, and the postage for online students. It is shown in the enrolment wizard before you pay.
- The deposit you pay to hold a place comes off the total, so it is not an extra cost.
- Places are limited for each holiday intake, in both the Parramatta class and the online class, and popular dates fill.
